In my 2008 photographic series Galaxies Within I used a microscope to capture the visual complexities that exist within things that we can’t readily see and would otherwise be blind to. Using the lens of the camera as an evidence-capturing device, I allow physically miniature objects to transcend their conventional identity and value. A new identity is revealed that is not as small and simple as one might assume but instead infinitely complex and ultimately enormous. Grains of sand take the stage as a fist full of flying jewels; Colorado dirt has the energy of a meteor; a plastic drink lead reveals solar systems; an egg the size of a fingernail becomes a planet. The viewer is invited to wonder.
