My 2009 video installation proposal New York Subway is a continuation of my Slow Races video series. Whereas the Slow Races videos achieve my goal of communicating the potential for rediscovery within the habitual and the depth of experience found within the slow gaze, Graphic design’s impetus for visual communication introduces the more complex problem of context. Rather than sequestering my videos to the vacuum of art galleries and museums, I propose bringing them to the public sphere. I envision a New York Subway installation which would allow my videos to confront their opposites: making a loud place quiet, a fast place slow, and a busy mind empty. A subway-map-sized drop of water endlessly creeping down an inch of window screen sends whispers of an alternate model for navigating experiences within the world to a sea of busy commuters.
