My 2007 artist book and poster piece Once upon the 13th explores the power that context has over meaning, language has over tone, and imagery has over empathy. Through the use of recontexualization, Once upon the 13th presents moments in history as a series of fables with morals. Presented in the nostalgic guise of a card game bound by a cloak of newspaper fabric, an array of news happenings is transformed into poems of whimsy whose morals are far darker than the tone of their delivery might suggest.
